  1. A certificate degree is a degree that will help you with a really basic skill, so that you can enter the job market.

A Masters degree is a specialization in a specific field that typically takes 2 to 3 years to complete.  In order of degrees, a certificate is at the bottom.

Certificate - one or two courses that give you a very general understanding of a subject matter.

Associates - two year program in a specific field that primes you for a bachelors.

Bachelors - any four year college

Masters - the field would be much more specific... people gets masters in physical therapy, early childhood education, construction management, international diplomacy, marketing, etc.

Doctorate - this will enable you to teach at the collegiate level.  The honorary doctorate is just a compliment for somebody in a field... like Bruce Willis might have an honorary doctorate of theater just for giving a speech but hasn't matriculated through ANY program at all.  Same with former presidents, business people, and philanthropists.
