  1. An ironic situation is when the opposite of what you expect happens.

(i.e. Bob won the lottery, but died as broke as a churchmouse...)

A coincidence is when two or more events take place that seem to be causing (or an effect of) each other, but really do not.

  2. A coincidence is when two (or more) things happen at the same time that you didn'tt expect. Like when two people run into each other, unexpectedly. An ironic situation is harder to explain. It's kind of like when something happens to ruin the situation, sometimes in a mean humor way. Like when there's a no smoking sign on your cigarrette break. Or when someone wins the lottery, and dies the day after. Basically a coincidence is good(usually), an ironic situation is bad.

  3. irony=1. the use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning: the irony of her reply, “How nice!” when I said I had to work all weekend.

    2. Literature. a. a technique of indicating, as through character or plot development, an intention or attitude opposite to that which is actually or ostensibly stated.

    b. (esp. in contemporary writing) a manner of organizing a work so as to give full expression to contradictory or complementary impulses, attitudes, etc., esp. as a means of indicating detachment from a subject, theme, or emotion.

coincidence=1. a striking occurrence of two or more events at one time apparently by mere chance: Our meeting in Venice was pure coincidence.

    2. the condition or fact of coinciding.

    3. an instance of this.

  4. well, a coincidence would be when two people who havent seen each other since high school meet in a store. irony would be two high school students meeting in a store, and then meeting again 50 years later in the same store.
