What is the difference between a conservative and libertarian

both of them want small government...so aren't they the same thing?

Libertarian= are liberal, they are for g*y marriages, legalizing marijuana, and so forth.

Go ask a conservative whether g**s should be able to marry and whether drugs should be legal.

libertarians believe in personal freedom and responsibility. They view government as necessary evil. It is there only to protect the people and maintain order. They believe in minimal taxes and government. The biggest difference between a modern conservative and libertarian is the social policies. Most conservatives today want laws that coincide with their religous beliefs along with deporting illegal immigrants, keeping marijuana and other victimless crimes illegal, etc.

Libertarian is a political party just like Republican and Democrat.

Conservatism is a politcal ideal.  Libertairan share some of the ideals of conservatism like smaller government.  They differ with Conservatives on things like forign policy and social policy.  The Republican party has not always completly embraced conservitism.  Most would agree that John McCain is not a conservative.

Libertarians believe the government shouldn't interfere in an individual's life, lifestyle or decisions that affect only the individual; that government should butt out, and this includes welfare and other wasteful endeavors, including foreign wars.

Conservatives believe that government can play a limited role in our lives, some social engineering, helping out genuinely incapable people, and projecting US power abroad when it's necessary for our domestic interests, etc.

Many Conservatives actually have libertarian views on many things, but just can't swing over for logical reasons.

Libertarians are ordinary conservatives who are tired of fighting some of the movement`s more obvious losing issues, such as the failed drug war and outlawing abortion, although all specific conservative positions are ultimate losers.  They definitely want smaller government in the hands of ruling elites.
