  1. A correspondent is usually at a distance from the home office or newspaper.  The term comes, of course, from correspond -- meaning letters or dispatches sent to the editorial offices from afar.

A reporter is usually a staff member of the news organization and probably works out of the city room or editorial offices.

While reporters are normally on staff, a correspondent might be a stringer for a news organization, or possibly even a freelancer.  So unlike a reporter working for only one news organization, a correspondent might be affiliated with a number of news organizations.

Hope this answer helps you understand the slight difference in terms.

  2. The two names are for the most part interchangeable, and mean the same basic thing.
