  1. A cryptographer decodes codes and cyphers. The other depends on what sector he works for


  2. A security engineer deals with the security of networks, systems and individual computers trying to do deter attacks from malicious hackers (yes, there are beneficial hackers) and malware. A cryptographer on the other hand, deals with securing data specifically, not wide systems and such. Basically, cryptographers try to make it safer to secure data by creating systems that implement an encoding process. Such things as the WPA/WEP wireless network security was made by cryptographers, as was the Public Key security system.

    As defined by google:

    cryptographer - decoder skilled in the analysis of codes and cryptograms

    Security engineering - a specialized field of engineering that deals with the development of detailed engineering plans and designs for security features, controls and systems.

    so that only authorized person can read it.

    A security engineer use firewall, router, password control to ensure security of the data servers.
