  1. My original description was wrong, as was my lifelong belief.

A cyclone in the Indian ocean, called a hurricane in the Atlantic, or a typhoon in the Pacific, is born over the sea and is huge, hundreds of miles wide and thousands of feet high.  Its damage mechanism is very high winds and rain spinning  around a lower pressure area.  It does great damage over very large areas, and can move over a thousand miles per day.

  2. It all depends on which side of the world you are on.

  3. Hurricanes are cyclones.

  4. a cyclone is an area of low atmospheric pressure characterized by inward spiraling winds that rotate counter clockwise in the northern hemisphere and clockwise in the southern hemisphere of the Earth.A hurricane or tropical cyclone is a storm system characterized by a low pressure center and numerous thunderstorms that produce strong winds and flooding rain. A tropical cyclone feeds on heat released when moist air rises, resulting in condensation of water vapour contained in the moist air. They are fueled by a different heat mechanism than other cyclonic windstorms such as nor'easters, European windstorms, and polar lows, leading to their classification as "warm core" storm systems.

  5. It largely depends on which part of the world you are in but in general, a hurricane or a typhoon is a more severe form of a cyclone.

  6. A cyclone is short, local and is "born" over land... a hurricane is bigger (measuring 100's of meters.) more slow to move but can last days and is "born" on the sea...  both are "born" under similar weather circumstances

  7. both are exactly the same even typhoon is the same thing ,,just termes are different ..they are given differet=nt terms in different countries

  8. I believe it has to do with the strength of the storm....?

  9. They are the same, just different parts of the world. Cyclone is also the generic name for hurricanes and typhoons.

  10. i know, and it's sad. there is actually no difference between cyclone and hurricane. its also called a typhoon in some places. in asia, they call it a hurricane, and a typhoon. when you cross the international date line, on this side, we call it a cyclone. i hope the families are okay. :(
