  1. go to howstuffworks.com to find out

  2. a few years ago the SLR is the film type and the digital was the electronic type. now they can be enjoyed both ways. the SLR is just a lot bigger and more professional in most ways. The digitals are mostly compact and have user friendly features for the average person to understand

  3. An SLR is a single lens reflex camera - basically, the viewfinder on the back looks through the lens, so what you see is what you get in terms of picture. A compact camera has a seperate viewfinder.

Both types are available as film or digital cameras.

  4. The biggest difference between a point-and-shoot and a DSLR is the ability to put different lenses on them. Well, that and size and usually price.

If you don't need the flexibility of extra lenses, and more importantly, don't want the hassle of that and the extra size and weight, go with a regular point-and-shot.

This degeeked.com article, "Should I get a DSLR or a point-and-shoot digital camera" goes into all the details, complete with links to low, mid, and high-end camera recommendations: http://www.degeeked.com/answers/detail/d...

  5. actully i think they do a one now thats both digital and slr....

  6. the zoom is not greater on a SLR camera, it's greater on a digital camera, because they can come, free, up to a 12x zoom lens. However, on a SLR camera, it usually comes with a 3x zoom lens, and if you want something to equate to 12x, which would be around a 400mm lens, you'd be looking at thousands.

Digital SLR's, and SLR's in general are much more expensive to maintain, and they are used primarily be professionals because of the cost. However, these days, most people can afford them if they really wanted them. also, most really nice digital SLR's don't come with a flash, and you have to buy one seperately, which is any few hundred dollars, and then you have to think about backdrops, filters, polarizers, grips, and much more..

it's just more expensive, you also ask what's the difference between them. Well, the obvious one is that you can change lenses and manipulate the quality you can obtain. Another thing, you have a Hot-Shoe adapter, and professional ports on a camera. Which, most point and shoot cameras don't have. You also ask which one you should get, you should really get the digital SLR, because the image quality is better, and you can get professional accesories, and get the best photos you possibly can for the price.

however, the cheapest camera is around 450$ with a 3x zoom lens, and if you want more, you're going to have to pay for it, and it's not going to be cheap. Photography gets expensive fast.
