When Massachusetts belonged to Britain; it changed from a colony to a dominion to a commonwealth. Why? What is the difference? Why is Canada called a dominion? Why are Pennsylvania, Virginia, Kentucky, and Puerto Rico called commonwealths today? Yes I know Kentucky used to be part of Virginia.
