What is the difference between a draw, a fade, a slice, and a pull in golf?

Basically, there are two types of golf shot - the ones that are made on purpose (a draw and a fade) and the ones that you messed up (a slice and a hook).

You can use the intended ones on dog-leg holes to move around the angle of the dog-leg, or with an approach shot to the greens (depending on the direction of the wind).

Some people are natural drawers or faders of the ball, and they find it difficult if they have to shape a shot against their natural direction.

But, if you consistently slice or hook the ball, then you need to do something to fix that proble.

For RH golfers:

Draw:  ball gradually moves to the left.  Its a very desired shot.

Fade:  ball gradually moves to the right, also desireable.

Slice:  Ball moves more sharply to the right, robbing you of distance - not good

Pull:  Ball starts out way left of intended line and continues on that line.

Also:  Hook:  Ball moves sharply to the Left - not good

A draw in golf is when your ball starts out right after contact then turns slightly to the left(for right handed golfers) as opposed to a hook that turns more pronounced to the left.

A fade is more or  less a mirror image of a draw, starting out left with  a turn to the right. A slice is more  pronounced right turn than a fade.

A pull happens when you hit the ball and it goes straight left with no turn, usually due to the swing or the ball staying on the club head face too long.

Definitions assume a right handed player. Lefties just reverse the direction.

Hook - Drastic curve to the left, well off the intended path.

Pull - Straight shot left of the intended path.

Draw - Slight curve from right to left.

Fade - Slight curve from left to right.

Push - Straight shot right of the intended path.

Slice - Drastic curve to the right, well off the intended path.

A draw and a fade hit the fairway / green and therefore you *meant* to hit the ball that way. A pull is an ugly outside/in swing that starts left and goes left (and often long!). A slice is an uglier, weak, high, short thing that looks like a week old banana and smells like a week old prawn. Avoid at all costs!
