  1. the only different ones are the Subaru and Porsche which use a Boxer or opposed four design, VW called it a pancake or flat four.   oh, ya, there was a V4,  The First Mustang was a V4 design,  which was a old design and used a lot in the 30s.40s.and 50's Europe. and there may still be some overseas...but for sure in motorcyles where it's compact design works great..

  2. in cars they are all inline for the most part meaning they are next to eachother. motorcycles however, a lot have v4s wich is like a v8 cut in half. a v design gives more low end tourqe but cannot rev as high there for not making as much power.that is why harley motorcycles with huge v twins(2 cylinders) make half the power as a sport bike with half as big of an engine. however those harley bikes have substantial torque

  3. Nothing different about them. They all have cylinders in a straight line.

  4. All 4 cylinders I have ever seen or heard of are inlines. Inline means the cylinders are arranged in a straight line from the front to the rear of the engine. Six cylinder engines can be found in either inline or V configuration as can eight cylinder engines. Most 8's are V design anymore. Back in the old days some, such as Pontiac and Buick made straight eights but they both switched to a V8 in the fifties. The advantage of a V design in larger engines is that the engine isn't as long and result in a lighter weight engine.

  5. No one makes a  "V-4" for a car, all automotive 4 cylender cars are inline 4's. There are many diffrent configurations of the inline 4, ie; SOHC (single overhead cam) , DOHC (duel overhead cams) etc...
