Also, a modern kayak is usually plastic of some kind, they can also be wood. A canoe has an open top and can fit at least 4 people.  Also, there is a difference in the type of paddle. A canoe, more that one person paddles with short, wooden paddles. With a kayak you use a long plastic and metal paddle that is double ended. all the previous answers are nonsense. The def of a kayak is a boat you sit in facing the front and use a two-bladed paddle. A kayak can be any shape. In a canoe you can sit or kneel, but use a single blade paddle. Again shape is irrelevant.
