  1. I have a female lutino cockatiel, and we discovered she was a she by the markings on the underside of her tailfeathers. They are very light in color so you have to look in bright light. She also laid an egg-dead giveaway!

  2. If your cockatiel is of normal coloring -- mostly gray with a yellow head -- the orange cheek patches will be much more vividly colored on the face of the male than they are on the female's.

If you have a whiteface -- or other color mutation of cockatiel, that does not have any yellow coloring -- it is more difficult to tell.  Some breeders can venture a good guess by measuring the width of the pelvic bone (a female's is wider, to allow for easy egg-laying), and most males are more vocal than females.

After one year of age, a single female will sometimes lay eggs -- even if she is alone!  (Don't worry, they are infertile, but let her sit with them until she tires of them, or she may become depressed.)

The sure-fire way to find out the gender of your little friend is to get a blood-test done, but this can be a little expensive.

  3. The differance between a male and female Cockatiel is the male usually whistles and talks, the female is more quiet and very rarely talks. The female usually has yellow and gray stripes on it's legs. The male is usually only gray with a yellow head, unless they are pied or lutino. Then it's very hard to tell males from females, except with a trained eye. It would be a good idea to ask the person you are buying from, what s*x they are.
