  1. When someone says "I'm getting a new muffler..... it means just that, muffler only.

If they say "I'm replacing my exhaust from the cat back", means they are changing everything behind the catalytic converter.

  2. a catback is usually called a intermediate pipe, it goes from the cat. converter back to the muffler.

  3. As stated before its from the catalytic converter back. Most manufacturers sell catback systems that usually have all the necessary components to install the system. It will usually come with extension pipe that will run from your cat back to you muffler, from the muffler back to tail pipes into exhaust tips.

  4. a muffler is just the noise canceler, a catback system is all the exhaust pipes and muffler or mufflers from the catalytic converter back to the end of the exhaust. A catback system would make your car run better along with the performance muffler, you can also get a high flow catalytic converter that will up your horsepower and sound a little also.
