  1. They are both called travel documents.

The term "passport" means any travel document issued by competent authority showing the bearer's origin, identity, and nationality if any, which is valid for the admission of the bearer into a foreign country.  It is issued by the country of which the traveler is a citizen.

A "visa" is a document issued by the country to which the person seeks to travel. It is normally issued before the traveler arrives at the port of entry of the country where he wants to enter.

For most countries, such as the U.S., a visa is not a guarantee of admission. It merely puts the holder in a position to apply for admission. The final admission decision is made by the officer at the port of entry. Mere possession of a visa means nothing if the applicant is found not eligible to enter the country when he arrives on its shores.

  2. A passport is simply a recognized identification document necessary for international travel.  It is issued after appropriate identification checks by the country of which you are a citizen.

Some people are citizens of more than one country and so may apply for two passports. It has your photo, some official information, an unique number and many blank pages which are stamped when you enter and leave a country (or a region such as the European Union). It doesn't automatically give you the right of entry into any country you wish to visit.

Countries require people from other countries to obtain permission to enter or stay in their country for specific periods of time or purposes. When these countries give you permission to enter they either put a stamp or a specially printed sticker in your passport. This is called a visa. the visa shows how long you may stay in that country, for what reason eg tourist, student or worker, and whether you can leave and reenter that country or just have one entry. The visa usually has a time period it is valid for so if not used at all its validity will expire.

Some countries have agreements that allow visitors from 'friendly' countries to enter with just a passport and no visa if they are just tourists.

Visas usually have to be organized before travel begins.

  3. A passport is issued by your home country and serves as identification when you seek to enter another country.  A visa is issued by the country you are visiting, and represents permission from that country to enter.
