  1. A patriot wants what is best for his/her country, and has the courage to recognize when the country is headed down a destructive path and try to do something about this.

A nationalist thinks everything his/her country does is automatically right, and the country can do no wrong.

  2. Spin, spin and a matter of degree.

How do you tell the difference between a commando and a terrorist?

By the direction his gun is pointing.

Your labels are the same it all depends on where you are standing.

  3. I'm going to skip dictionary definitions and go from the heart. Patriotic is simply having pride in your country, right or wrong. Much like it is reasonable to have a certain pride on oneself even if you do disappointing things from time to time. Nationalistic goes a step further and says, my country is better than every other country, hands down. Ultranationalist seems to say "My country does no wrong that is not somehow justified and every other country is inferior to ours both in status and morally. All other countries that do not recognize this should be dealt with."

  4. A patriot fights for freedom from government.

A nationalist fights for conformity for government.

  5. A nationalist is basically a person who believes that "their people" (in-group bias) are better than other people.

A patriot is someone who believes in their country. They don't necessarily have to believe in their government to believe in their country.

  6. Patriots (also known as Americans, Whigs, Revolutionaries, Congress-Men or Rebels) was the name the colonists of the British Thirteen Colonies who rebelled against British control during the American Revolution called themselves. It was their leading figures who, in July 1776, declared the United States of America an independent nation. Their rebellion was based on the political philosophy of republicanism, as expressed by pamphleteers such as Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, and Thomas Paine. The term “Patriot” was in use by American colonists prior to the war during the 1760s, referring to the American Patriot Party. Members of the American Patriot Party also called themselves Whigs after 1768, identifying with members of the British Whig Party, i.e., Radical Whigs and Patriot Whigs, who favored similar colonial policies. As a group, Patriots comprised men and women representing the full array of social, economic, ethnic and racial backgrounds. They included college students like Alexander Hamilton, planters like Thomas Jefferson, merchants like Alexander McDougall, and plain farmers like Daniel Shays and Joseph Plumb Martin.

Those colonists who remained loyal to the British Crown called themselves Loyalists or "Tories". In addition, many people remained neutral or said nothing. Many Patriots were active before 1775 in groups such as the Sons of Liberty. The most prominent leaders of the Patriots are referred to today by Americans as the Founding Fathers of the United States.
