Females horses it becomes a little more dependent upon breeding.  Since it is extremely uncommon to spay a female horse, except for medical reasons.  A maiden is a adult female horse which has not previously been bred, while a mare is a horse that has been bred.  However the term mare is usually used inclusive of all adult female horses.
