  1. Mushrooms (fungi) differ from plants in being heterotrophic (plants are autotrophs), having cell walls made of chitin (plant cell walls contain cellulose), and taking in nutrients through absorption (plants make their own food with photosynthesis). There are other differences, but these are the three main ones.
