  1. Personally, i prefer leather on both of my cues. I Chose an axiom Breaking cue because i could have the weights in the butt customized to more the center of gravity from just above the wrap to about 2 inches from the bottom of the wrap. This allows me to have more velocity in my break (as I'm not a big guy with 100 extra pounds of muscle). I also had the shafts for my breaker tapered to about 14 inches from the ferrel. which gives me more flex and snap on the break. Kind of the way meucci cues used to play before they became junk.I use a 13mm tip for both of my regular shooters, this is more about ease of repairing and maintenance of them than anything else. So really in the end there doesn't have to be a difference, its all about personal feelings and what makes you comfortable playing with. hope i was helpful. happy poolin

  2. Break cue tips are harder, usually made out of phenolic resin, a type of plastic.  Playing cue tips are made out of leather.  You can break with a playing cue just fine, but your tip would wear down a little faster and become hard.  Playing with your break cue is difficult though because the phenolic doesn't hold chalk very well so it's easy to miscue and difficult to control the cue ball.

  3. Unless its a jump/break cue having 2 joints there isn't really much difference as far as the make up of the cue.  You can use any cue for breaking, the difference usually is that you are going to have a harder tip such as a phenolic and its going to be less rounded then your shooting tip, and my break cue is just a bit lighter then my shooting cue.  For the most part having 2 separate cues is to save your shooting tip from the wear of breaking and personal preference as far has tips go.

  4. I am a touring pro and instructor who has just the answer your looking for. First, your breaking  cue has a different front end design. This means the taper of the shaft and the mm of it will be somewhat larger. The tip to will be harder. If the cue in question is a "Jump/Break" cue the tip will be very hard.  Second is the balance. The balance point on a break cue will be further back than your playing cue. This puts the weight in your hand rather than towards the front of the cue. Here's a tip for ya, if you don't break very hard you wont do any harm to your playing cue. Remember: Only break as hard as you can control. Hope this helps if not email me!

  5. A breaking cue is usually a stiff cue with a hard tip, and the regular shooting cue has a much smaller, softer tip for making shots with more english and better control.
