  1. Psychiatrist has gone to medical school as well as additional school and training, and has the ability to prescribe Rx in all states and for all conditions; a psychologist has a PhD and can only prescribe in some states and only certain medications in those states where they have prescriptive powers.

  2. psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can prescribe drugs and make a diagnosis

psychologist has a PhD, but is not a medical doctor, and can not prescribe drugs. They usually either partake in research, or therapy.

  3. A psychiatrist is a Medial Doctor and can prescribe medication.  A psychologist is not a medical doctor, just a counselor who can not prescribe medication.  My daughter takes medication for depression, anxiety and add.  She gets her prescriptions from the psychiatrist who she meets with about every 3 months.  She sees her psychologist for counseling once a week.

  4. I think you mean a psychiatrist.  A psychologist has a Ph.D, and uses talk therapy and various behavioral techniques.  They usually see patients regularly- like weekly.  A psychiatrist is an M.D., and can prescribe medication.  They generally see patients less often, and help them maintain and adjust their medication based on their individual diagnoses and progress.

  5. Yup. A psychiatrist is an M.D. (a medical doctor). A psychologist is a Ph.D. (not a medical doctor). Psychiatrists can prescribe drugs. Psychologists can't. These days most psychiatrists are psychopharmacologists (their main job is diagnosing illness and prescribing and monitoring medications). Psychotherapy is usually done with a clinical psychologist or with a social worker. Some psychologists aren't clinical - they're researchers, or work in industry, etc.

  6. A psychiatrist is an MD.  A psychologist has a degree in psychology.  While this may include some of the physical aspects of mental illness, they cannot prescribe drugs or practice medicine.
