  1. puffy ones make it hurt less

  2. puffys are usually made of some sort of down mixture, the higher the nember the warmer it will be. Insulated jackets are much lighter than a down filled one and are filled with synthetic blends. Usually down jackets offer a lower water proof rating, because they are ment more for colder dryer temps. Insulated jackets usually range any where from 5k to gortex in water proofing. If you are looking for a good puffy check out the 686 ace line.

  3. A "puffy" jacket is insulated with feathers / down, most typical insulated jackets are insulated with synthetic insulation. Puffy jackets are usually not very good in wet conditions and are really made for VERY cold dry conditions.

The shell of a puffy jacket is usually just water proofed nylon. This will be less water resistant than a jacket with a membrane - like GoreTex, etc. which are better for wet weather.

You  are typically better off to get a "shell" which is an un-insulated outer jacket and layer it with a fleece or hoodie or sweater underneath. This will allow you to remove a layer when you are too warm but still have a waterproof outer layer. A thin GoreTex shell can be comfortable completely zipped even on a 60 degree day and keep you dry.

    Good Luck

  4. alright... i worked in retail so i know this well...

puffy = down (feathers) will keep you nice and toasty and will add padding when you fall! however, they have minimal water protection and will not work when wet. wet down keeps you wet not warm...

insulated jackets that involve a liner and a hardshell are the most popular type of jacket. these work really well and are ajustable to the temperature... in the coldest of conditions the down jacket is the better choice but in every other condition this jacket is the better choice... (although it doesnt have as good padding for when you fall)

unless youre in a cold dry area id get the insulated jacket

    good luck!
