What is the difference between a sacrifice and a payment?

I am reading watership down and I am wondering if the rabbits from cowslips warren are being sacrificed or being used as payment? What is the difference between payment and sacrifice in general? please help me.

  1. i never read Watership Down. But in general I'd say the difference is a payment  is usually an act of giving money for  a good or service.  A sacrifice is usually an act of doing something either physically or emotionally (though could be financially) to better yourself or others. A sacrifice has a certain righteousness to it. For example,  I make payments on my car that i use as a convenience to get around. But i would sacrifice my car, and ride a bike for my health. Hope that helped.
