  3. "Singh" is a common surname in Hinduism as well as Sikhism. It means "Lion". Other forms during various times have also been used such as, Simha, Sinha, Singha. Singapore also gets its name from the Hindu surname. The Sinhalese people are also a reference to "lion people".  It is a common surname used  for the Kshatriya or warrior castes of Hindus. They could be Rajputs, Yadavs, Jats, Ahirs etc. The Sikh religion was formed much later by Guru Nanak who raised them as saints. He was the first Guru. The tenth Guru Gobind Singh raised the "Khalsa"(Punjabi) from "Khalas"(persian) or "pure" to be monotheistic Saint/soldiers. All Sikh men since then use the surname "Singh" which means lion and all Sikh women use "Kaur" which means "princess". There are some sects too within sikhism such as the Namdhari sikhs who are different.
