  1. A solar eclipse is when the moon comes between the sun and Earth.  A lunar eclipse is when the Earth comes between the moon and the sun.  Both of these descriptions need to be revised by the word "directly".  In other words, a solar eclipse is when the moon comes directly between the sun and the Earth, and a Lunar eclipse is when the Earth comes directly between the moon and the sun.

The Umbra of these eclipses is the area where the shadow cause by these movements is the most evident, and the Penumbra of these eclipses is the area where the shadow will be only partial.  I have not only seen a solar eclipse but I have been in the Umbra of a Solar eclipse and it's awsome.  It truly does seem as if it's night, when it's day, but it only lasts a very little while, not all day, just a couple of hours.
