What is the difference between a tail pipe and an exhaust pipe?

...and do you always have to buy one separate from the muffler?

  1. Tail pipe is the peice you see at the back of your car. It can be chrome or stainless steel. The exhaust pipe is the pipe running from the engine to the muffler. The muffler is between the exhaust pipe and tailpipe.

    It kind of depends on who your talking to ... To some the exhaust pipe is the whole pipe from the motor out the end.. to some its from the motor to the muffler and the tail pipe well be the exhaust pipe the continues from the muffler out the back of the car,

    OH and yes you  can replace one with out the other.

  3. exhaust pipe is the section from the engine to the muffler ,the tail pipe is the piece from the muffler to what you see out the back or side of a vehicle

  4. The two are at times used interchangably. However the tail pipe is usually taken to mean the piece which sticks out the rear of the car while the exhaust pipe usually indicates the one from the engine to the muffler. Most generally the pipes and mufflers are separate though they can, for most cars, be purchased as a set.
