I have just setup a LAN on my PC using a netgear router. The connects to pc using a blue ethernet cable. I now want to link my Laptop to the router. I have a yellow ethernet cable which came with an old wireless router.

The router i am using is WIRED. Will it make a difference if i connect my laptop to the WIRED router using a yellow ethernet cable instead of a blue one?

  1. The color matters not at all.  On the cable there should be markings stating cat5, cat5E, and cat 6. You can mix and match, but a good middle of the road cable is cat5e.

  2. No it shouldnt make a difference its just different companies making cables in different colours

  3. There's usually no difference, people just make the insulation in different colours.  Sometimes there will be significance, like yellow for crossover and pale blue for rollover (Cisco style), I've also seen blue used for straight-through.

Use either.  Even if it doesn't work, it won't damage anything.

  4. Cable color is cosmetic. On each cable there is a confusing hodgepodge of words and numbers, but what you are looking for is CAT or CATEGORY 5 or 5E or 6. When you see that it means the cable is the kind that is designed for Ethernet traffic (and other stuff).

One word of warning: There is a special version of an Ethernet cable known as a CROSSTALK cable. It SHOULD be labeled as such, but sometimes it isn't.

You'll not hurt anything if it is and you use it, it just won't work.

BTW it's used to hookup two computers to each other directly.

  5. There are the same thing

  6. There is probably no difference, a difference in colour should not matter as all ethernet conncectors are the same. It should work.

  7. There is not difference in color.  The only difference that comes into play is  when your start running your cables over long distances.

  8. there different colours so you know which is which

  9. Nothing is different. The color is typically used for organization purposes. However, if you looked closely on the cord, and it had the words printed Cat5E or Cat6, then basically one color might mean Cat5E and one might mean Cat6. Cat5e is the general choice of cable, but Cat6 is generally better since it supports better bandwidth.

  10. None,

I also have red, green, black, white as well.

There is no standardization in regard to regular or crossover matching to colors.

  11. The difference is that one may be a crossover & the other a patch cable.

The only way to be sure is to know the configuration of the cables.
