I need to know what the difference is between a red card and a yellow card and how the "sin bin" plays into it.

  1. A yellow card is specifically there for technical infringements in the game, such as handling in the ruck, slowing the ball down etc. A red card is for dangerous play. Stamping punching etc.

Although the sad fact is that most refs don't have the bottle to go to red for foul play, they issue a yellow instead.

Punishment is different for both also.

A single yellow card in a match means that the player has to leave the field of play for a period of 10 minutes (excluding stoppage time called by the referee. This could be for injury, or technical assistance such as using the TMO (television match official) to adjudicate on a score or the like.

Once the player has served his 10 minutes he requests to come back pon and the ref has to call him on. If a player gets a second yellow in the same match, it automatically becomes a red. So the ref would show the yellow, then immediately the red card.

RED CARD : This is meant for dangerous fol play such as stamping on a player, kicking a player, tripping a player, punching a player, making contact with a player while he is off the ground (such as lineout or when he has jumped to take a high catch). In short, dangerous play

The red car means endof game for you, or early shower as it is commonly known ;-) . BUT it does not end there. ALL red card offences result in a disipliniary hearing from the governing body in charge of that match. In international matches that would be the IRB, or 6 nations or tri nations etc.

Players at these hearings are likely to get a further ban that is 'supposed ' to be in direct relation to the offence.

The above information for red card also applies to a player getting two yellows in the same match.

And 'sin bin' is a slang term for being off the field due to having 'sinned' In rugby there is no real area laid out as a si bin place, the players tend to sit on the bench and keep warm, then warm up again just before they go back on.

  2. A yellow card is accompanied with a 10 minute sitting out in the 'Sin Bin'. So if someone commits an offence and is yellow carded on 20 minutes, the player must leave the field and wait until the 30th minute (of the game - not necessarily 10 minutes after the yellow card if there are any injuries for example) before he can return to the field and rejoin play. Similar to the 'power play' (I think) in hockey.

A red card means you won't be getting back on the pitch, no matter when you were sent off. Like the red card in football/soccer.

  3. Once a player gets a yellow card they go in the sin bin which is just a chair, they will have to stay there for 10 minutes before they can go back on, a red card is just like in Soccer they stay off for the rest of the game.
