  1. Absorbtion spectra are those of light either transmitted (transmission) or reflected (remission) by the specimen, showing by comparison with the incident beam what has been absorbed by the target.

    Emission spectra are obtained from the energy given off by a  sample that is heated or otherwise excited - flame emission spectrosopy for example


  2. An absorption spectrum shows the frequencies of light not reflected by a material. Emission spectra show the frequencies of light given off by a material when heated or excited.
