What is the difference between an ID and a Driver's License?

There was a check sent to me as a gift. I want to cash it, but my mother says I need an ID. She said it's not a license, it's different. Now what is the difference? And can I obtain an ID without having to go through the step needed to get a license? Thanks.

You don't have to know how to drive to get an ID, but they are issued at the DMV, a driver's license is a form of ID, but you also have to pass the driver's tests. To get an ID, you'll need a copy of your birth certificate, your social security card, and a piece of mail sent to your current address, addressed to you, preferably from a business, like a phone bill or electric bill. Both are forms of identification. One has the added benefit of allowing you to legally operate a motor vehicle, the other merely certifies your identity.

Yep, you can just walk in to get an ID... no tests..

Alot of people use these for work purposes, or cashing checks, (if they do not have a drivers licensee...)

an ID is simply any document or card that establishes your identity.  For example a passport is an ID, or there are employee ID cards.  It typically confers no rights or privlidges other then possibly acknowledging who you are and other pertinant facts about you (date of birth, address, etc..)

A Drivers license is exactly what the name implies.  It is a license to drive a motor vehicle issued to a specific individual.  As such, a driver's license is ALSO an ID.

An ID is proof of Identification. An ID can be a state ID, social security card, School ID, Credit Card, Anything with your name and/or your picture on it.

A drivers license is also an ID but it also gives you the priveledge to drive.

A regular ID is just for identification, not for driving priveledges

To get an ID, Just go to your local DMV, you will probably need your birth certificate or social security card. They will snap your picture and you will have your ID.  You won't have to go thru any tests to get an ID like you would a license
