Earls rule earldoms, and dukes rule duchies, like kings rule kingdoms.

  1. an earl is usually the second title a Duke has, or he can be a son of a Monarch, or marry a Monarch's daughter.

The Monarchy has the power to give this Title without Parliament approval, but they tell them their entensions as a curitisy.oh, by the way

NO ONE RULES ANYTHING!!!!!!except the Monarch, every one else is a Manager.

    so there ya go!

  2. FionaA is utterly and unforgivably wrong.  A Duke owns a Duchy, which is an area of land granted to him by the Monarch. An Earl owns an Earldom, which is an area granted to him by a Monarch.

A Duke is the highest noble rank under royal rank. An Earl is the third highest noble rank (of equal significance to a Count, below Marque and Duke).
