Question:

What is the difference between an oil can and regular chrome spin milled vokey?

I'm getting one but not sure. I can put spin on the ball, no enough to spin it back, but close. I can hit wedges consistently solid, but I'm getting a new sand wedge. I have a cleveland cg 14 60 degree wedge, and it's okay, but I hit the vokey wedges better, and I don't have a sand wedge. Spin is most important to me right now, so which do you guys suggest?

  1. It has been proven that the rust does not increase spin. Also the oil can is unplated carbon steel, so the grooves will wear out faster. But the oil can just looks so awesome, doesn't it?

  2. if spin is the most important then get the oilcan.  as it gets older it will start to get a little rust on it that will increase the spin.

  3. Oil can and chrome.....they are only finishs that affect appearance....not playability.......Go with what appeals to you.

  4. I've always heard that rustier (oil can) makes for better spin, but I have no evidence to back it up.  If you start to lose spin, you may need to get your grooves sharpened, they will degrade as they rust.

  5. the oil can for spin.  Golf Magazine has proven that a rusted wedge creates more spin than normal (one rusting for 3 years vs. a brand-new chrome of the same brand), because the ball sticks to the face longer.  Also, try a smoother swing on your short shots.  That'll allow the ball to climb the face of the club longer.  Add that to the rusted wedge, and hopefully that'll get you the extra spin you're looking for.
