the idea of the self.  today's art is all about self expression.  in the renaissance there was a very different notion of what the self was, and it had no expression in art of the day.  renaissance art was about perfection, devotion and idealization

well, the renaissance came right after the black death, so people were feeling really spiritual.  art in the renaissance period was often religious. mona lisa was painted during the renaissance, along with the statue of david and several other artworks. people in the renaissance lived for the day and diddnt worry about anything else but living their life. nowadays, artwork is more abstract, and not as many portraits are being done. i hope i helped. =)
