What is the difference between balsa wood and black ironwood??

  2. Balsa wood is the lightest, least dense wood.  Black ironwood is the heaviest, densest wood.

    I could break a 1x1 of balsa over your head as a joke - you'd hardly feel it.  With ironwood...well, what broke wouldn't be the wood.

    Balsa is also very easily carved - it is used extensively in modeling.  Ironwood is very difficult to cut, and dulls the edge of the blade carving it.

    Balsa is used in airplane and boat models.  Ironwood was once used to make bearings for inside some very early steam engines.
