  1. Bulking and cutting are old school ideas.  It still happens today but is quite honestly the worst way to go about things.

Bulking is increasing your calorie intake with the idea of gaining muscle mass.  During this period it'd inevitable to gain fat.  Cutting is reducing calories to try spare muscle and cut body fat.  This should result in increased muscle definition.

Generally you should bulk without junk food to limit your fat gain but it happens anyway.  You then spend months cutting fat and losing half the muscle you gained.

I'm going to throw out some totally random figures for illustration.

Let's say you bulk up and gain 50lb.  We'll assume that 25% of that is fat.  That means 12.5lb is fat.  You only gained 37.5lb of muscle.

So now you decide to cut.  You cut your calories and add more cardio.  You burn those 12.5lbs of fat.  You also burn up 15lb of the muscle you added.  That means after all your work you have only gained 22.5lb of muscle.  In other words at the end of dieting and working out for months you gained very little actual muscle.

The best way to do it is first make sure that you already have a fairly low body fat.  10% is a good place to start.

Now instead of outright bulking just eat a small surplus of calories.

This way your gains per week or month are actually lower but over the long term it results in more real muscle gain.  You would still have a bit of fat to cut but it'd be very little and you wouldn't burn that hard earned muscle.

Gaining muscle is not a quick thing by any means.

To work out everything just go to www.bodybuilding.com/fun/issa64.htm

At the bottom of the page is a calculator that will tell you calories, protein, carbs, fat, everything.

  2. Bulking is trying to get big and strong. Cutting is going for looks, such as a six pack. In the long run Bulking is better than cutting, however, dont eat fast foods.

  3. Bulking is adding weight usually through eating tons of food and exercising. Cutting is leaning out and dieting to get rid of fat.
