Handycam is a brand name for sony's line of camcorders, just like their vaio line of laptops or their walkman line of mp3 players. There is no difference

There isn't really. Handycam is a Sony trademark for their line of camcorders. It's just like how "Walkman" is a Sony trademarked phrase for a cassette portable.

Anyway, I suggest you stick to the MiniDV units. They're both cheapier and have less compressed video. Seriously, all things equal, a MiniDV unit will have an edge in image quality. They can't do full high def (only 1440x1080), admittedly, but many hard disk units share that flaw too.
