  2. Philanthropy generally involves a wealthy benefactor who underwrites a major endeavor.  For example, someone who funds the construction of a new university building would be a philanthropist, and often the building would be named after that person.

    Charity is any situation where a person gives to help the needy.

    Charity mainly implies just giving.  Dropping some change into the homeless guy's cup

    Philanthropy implies a more active stance.  Setting up charities and fundraisers.  Organizing and such.  Setting up a foundation.
