  4. "Community Service" can be court orderd, but is not necessarily always court ordered. It is also not always done for free. Example: your local police do a community service by keeping the streets aafe for you and your family.. as best they can.

    "Volunteering" is doing something just because you want to. It is not always doing something for a non-profit either, but is generally associated with helping out at non-profit organizations. It can include other things as well. Example: Volunteering to babysit your sister's kids so she and husband can have a night out.

    These are sometimes interchangable, but not always. Volunteering is not always for doing a community service and doing community service is not always voluntary.

    It really depends on what the situation is.

    Basically the difference is:

      Community service is doing something that benefits the community (whether you are paid, it is court ordered or you are volunteering to do it);

    Volunteering is doing something just because you want to and not expect anything in return. You are not compelled to do this other than to gain a sense of satisfaction for yourself.

  5. Both are about free labor. Volunteering is  done of free will. Community service is usually a requirement from some court action administered through a non profit volunteer  agency.

  6. community service is "ordered" volunteering.

  7. Community service and volunteering are both unpaid labor, indeed. I tend to talk about community service for people who are compelled by the court or school to provide service to the community, whereas volunteering is more freewill. Both often work side-by-side, doing exactly the same service, and when volunteer recognition comes around, community service people usually get the same mugs, pins and certificates as everyone.

    But the two terms are NOT interchangeable in every case: people can volunteer for political causes, for instance, and are usually *not* seen as community service volunteers. A lot of people wouldn't consider volunteers for Greenpeace, the Sierra Club, a pro-choice group, an anti-choice group, a hunting-rights group, etc. as "community service" volunteers, while others would. It depends on your definition of "community", and what you think is for the benefit of such.

    Even the term "volunteer" is disputed -- some volunteer managers don't count unpaid interns as volunteers, because they are getting class credit, or wouldn't count employees on loan from a corporation as volunteers because they are still getting their paychecks for the time spent at the nonprofit. Others would say, as long as someone is not paid by the organization itself, he or she is a volunteer, period.

  8. there is no difference, these terms are interchangeable:

    "Community service refers to service that a person performs for the benefit of his or her local community. People become involved in community service for a range of reasons — for some, serving community is an altruistic act, for others it is a punishment or even sometimes makes a friend"

    It can be a requirement for graduation, resume building or a form of punishment or a choice you make. But it is done usually without renumeration (pay)-for free.

  9. community service is usually a form of sentence given to a person for commiting a misdemeanor crime. volunteering usually means you are giving of your personal time to some organized group. it can be in your church, community, hospital

    school, or any place to would like to spend your time doing something for someone else without pay.
