  1. Both are violations of social norms. It is only criminal to break formal norms, but it is deviant to break both formal and informal norms.

It is not deviant to break some formal norms. Although the law may say that the speed limit on the highway is 65, if you go over the speed limit by 5 mph along with everyone else that is not deviant behavior. Not even the police will enforce that formal norm.

A crime has an added characteristic in that a law has been passed against it, making it a crime or criminal offence.

Deviation is  what is defined as not normal by norms, values, or laws. This could be something as minor as wearing the wrong kind of clothes to a party or as major as killing someone – deviance is behavior that is not seen as acceptable or normal.

Some deviance is only enforced by social sanctions, while Crime is enforced by formal institutions - the police enforce laws. Crimes are often also enforced by social sanctions.

P.S. God has nothing to do with the difference. Norms and Deviance can be explained by things like structural functionalism, symbolic interactionism (specifically labeling theory), and even conflict theory. If you wiki deviance (sociology) you can read more about how those main theories in soc relate to the subject, and mentioning them correctly in an assignment will surely win you points with a prof.

  2. You want five?  You can be devious without committing a crime.  Many things are against God's laws, but not against human laws.  1. How about a woman who pretends she's pregnant to keep her boyfriend - devious, but not a crime.

    2. A boyfriend who says he'll kill himself if his girlfriend leaves.  Manipulative, but no crime.

    3. A child who says they will clean their room after you give them their reward - then they don't.  No crime committed, but a mistrust is gained.

    4. A person claims they've been sterilized, but then ends up conceiving, and going after child support.  Not a crime, but a bad deed indeed.

    5. Your spouse tells you that a ring stolen by their child was actually in some socks that you threw away.  A lie, and sin in God's eyes and mine, but not a crime.
