What is the difference between diction and syntax?

  1. Diction refers to the meaning of words (dict- = dictionary, that's how I remember it). ^_^

    Syntax it the WAY you use words, like arrangement of words to make them more effective.


  2. Well, diction is the author's choice of words.

    For example he could use puppy and that usually has a positive connotation, or he could use mutt which usually carries a negative connotation but if he uses the word dog it is neutral.

    Simply put, it is the words the author chooses to further enhance his writings or make the reader feel a certain way.

    Syntax is the composition of the sentences-the order of the subject and verb, the length or the variation of the length-and the patterns of the sentences or phrases!

    Like if he uses anaphora, asyndeton, polysendeton, epistrophe, or antithesis.
