  1. just incase anyone has confused you, dolby digiltal are the proud owners of prolodgic. Prolodgic quite simply is Dolby trying to show off, didn't really work! For beter sound use one of the other surround setings on your surround system.some good answers there thuough

  2. They are different products... I prefer dolby digital. (Hope that was helpful :) )

  3. Like what's been said, dolby digital is 5 discrete channels plus the subwoofer and pro logic is sort of fake 5.1. It takes a 2 channel signal and intelligently makes 5.1 out of it.

There are a few gritty details if you want:

    PRO-LOGIC:

Starts with a stereo (2 channel) ANALOG signal so stereo VCR's and stereo televisions would not have to change to carry it. It featured:

    - A voice-track can be stripped from the L/R signals to feed a center speaker.

    - A single rear-track can be stripped from the L/R signals to feed 2 speakers - but the same sound goes to both rear speakers and no sounds below about 150 hz could go to the rears.

    Dolby Digital

This is a sound standard for a single wire could include 5 separate, full-range channels/speakers of sound, and a dedicated subwoofer channel.

The DD signals is highly compressed compared to a normal audio CD.  But the sound is restored on the destination side so smartly - most people cannot tell the compression is 6:1.

Dolby offered this sound standard to the HDTV committee and it was adopted as the standard for HDTV audio in the US.

    DTS

This is a competitor to Dolby Digital by a different company and features less compression so it has the potential to sound better, but it takes up more space on a disk to get this.  It has not taken off as well.

  5. Dolby Digital is a track with 5 seperate channels and an LFE (low frequency effect) and is encoded on most DVDs, BluRays, some video games, some High def from cable, sat, or off air hd. Pro Logic is a version of stereo sound spliced to come out of 5 speakers. The sound quality is much better using Dolby Digital.
