  1. Flat paint has no shine to it when it dries, semi-gloss paint has a bit of a shine to it.

But it depends on what you are painting as to which one you use.

  2. As others answered, it relates to sheen, or shininess. As a rule of thumb, ceilings get flat paint, baseboard, trim, and cabinets get gloss, walls get eggshell, semi-gloss, or satin. Reference the article for details.

  3. The gloss is the difference in the semi gloss, personally it all depends on your walls ,if they are free of imperfections  then by all mean use it , it's easy to wipe down and gives you a shine to the walls. I have to use egg shell for mine because I need to camouflage these imperfections. I used semi gloss for the trim work . I like semi gloss finish in baths and kitchen but that's is far is it go ,the rest is all flat.

  4. For most rooms, flat looks best, with mouldings painted in semi gloss or eggshell. For bathroom, semi gloss will clean up best. In bathroom prime after washing wall with a mold resistant primer, such as Kilz and you will not have mold building up much in that room

  5. durability, scrubbability and the sheen....Semi gloss is alot tougher than flat paint..flat is not washable and not as durable..however on walls semi gloss will show every little flaw..I suggest a good satin finish on walls which is also scrubbable if you dont get a cheap brand..semi gloss is usually used on doors and trim
