  1. A floating plant floats on the surface, like a waterlily, water hyacinth, or duckweed.

    A submerged plant, like algae, doesn't stick up above the surface. It may be rooted to the bottom, or free-floating.

    A partially submerged plant is rooted on the bottom, but sticks up above the surface, like a cattail or rush.
