What is the difference between gas and fuel for lawn mower?

I've bought the Craftman Lawn Mower. There was a sign said " No gas in tank, use fresh fuel only". I thought that gas and fuel the same thing, because I had asked the saleman what kind of gas should i use, he said use regular gas. So, I put gasoline in it, and when I tried to start. It ran for about 10 sec. and then it stop. Any suggestion?

Thanks.

  1. Gas is fuel. You didn't use old gasoline did you?Where was this no gas in tank sign?Have you read your owners manuel

  2. The words are interchangable.  But, do not use gasoline that has ethanol added to it.  In Oklahoma such notification has to be on the pump.  Also check your fuel line as some of them have an in-line shut off that might be off.  Who you bought it from  might be glad to give you advice.

  3. Gas is short for gasoline.  That note on the new mower was to make sure that the owner knew he/she had to put fuel in the gasoline tank.

There probably is a cutoff valve in the fuel line between the tank and the carburetor of the engine that let just enough gas leak through for the engine to start up and run for that short time.  The cutoff valve should be opened *wide* for the proper continuous running of the engine.

  4. It sounds like your choice of fuel is fine. The carb. adjustments may be out a bit or the jetting for your elevation maybe incorrect. Try a little more/less choke, and/or a little more/less throttle, than the starting instructions ask for. If you smell gasoline; it is flooded. Then try less choke and throttle wide open until it stops sputtering and smooths out. If it fails to start; remove and dry spark plug [allow time for cylinder to dry out], re-install, and try again. When running for the 10 sec.; try manipulating the choke and/or the throttle quickly to positions where it runs better. If it fails to start relatively easy, it may require some fine adjustment from a mechanic.

  5. The sign was merely to advise you that the tank was empty. You may have air in the fuel lines and need to pump the primer a few extra times until it has fuel/gas fillling it up all the way through the carb.
