  1. They are the same thing.

    No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu = Submission Wrestling

But they style kinda depends on the instructor.

  2. all i know is they are martial arts

  3. same thing..if you have morons doing both we all lose. plus if your able to submit a guys ball sack in a real fight you win much quicker. too bad you don't see george st pierre yanking on another guys c**k and shnozzle.

  4. The biggest difference won't be what the class is titled but who is teaching it.  For the No Gi BJJ class if you have a traditional BJJ Instructor it won't look or feel the same as if you have a Freestyle Wrestler who knows their submissions.  IF you watch Josh Barnett vs Big Nog you will understand better what I mean.  Both are top knotch grapplers but approach attacks and subs from completely different mindsets, Josh will force the issue and power into his subs full force, Nog will bait you with one, two, three submissions before sweeping, but it is much more relaxed and takedowns aren't quite as strong.

So IMO it depends more on what the instructors background is more than what the class is called.  Either should be fine to get started though.

    Hope this helps a little.

  5. Primarily a matter of nuances. Submission Wrestling will focus somewhat more on the takedowns and top position work, whereas No-Gi BJJ has less emphasis on the takedowns and more emphasis on guard work and obtaining top position from the bottom.

Both will have the same kind of submissions though the BJJ class will probably see more Triangles, Armbars, Omoplatas from guard and the Sub Wrestling will see more Americana's, Kimura's, Armbars from Mount.

I recommend trying both of them and talking to the instructors to get a better idea of what the specific differences are.

Edit: Desk3Bound has no idea what he's talking about, pay no attention to him.

Edit: Greg M also is clearly riding the short bus to school.

  6. Most forms of submission wrestling are basically the same thing as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with no gi. The originator of Gracie Jiu Jitsu, Count Como Maeda studied both Catch Wrestling (original submission wrestling created in Japan) and Judo before creating his system of grappling that he simply called 'jiu jitsu', which his student Helio Gracie later turned into 'Gracie Jiu Jitsu'. Jiu Jitsu pioneer Eddie Bravo has mastered performing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu without a gi, which for all intents and purposes is the same thing as submission grappling.

  7. Jiu-Jitsu is not grappling/wrestling.

Jiu-jitsu employs: pressure points; eye-gouging; hair pulling; spitting; small joint manipulation; punching & kicking & blocking; arm & leg locks; throws; chokes; hold-downs; and weapons usage and weapons defense all for the purpose of self-defense in a street fight.

It is a common mistake for some reason to confuse wrestling with Jiu-jitsu.  They are as different as apples and oranges.

Most of the techniques mentioned above are banned from grappling/submission wrestling.  Grappling/submission wrestling is a 'ring fighting style' designed to be employed in front of witnesses (screaming ticket buying fans) and with a referree to make $$$$$$$ and win nice shiny trophies.
