What is the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation? Can you provide an example of each?

  1. Intrinsic is when you are motivated by an internal factor...a child who studies for a test because getting an A will make them feel good is intrinsically motivated.  Extrinsic is when you are motivated by an external factor...a child who studies for a test because mom will give them $5 if the get an A is extrinsically motivated.  intrinsic motivation is generally more effective, but harder as a teacher or parent to instill.

    EDIT:  The definitions do not change for a student with a disability.


  2. Intrinsic - internal choice that something is meaningful / worth learning   ex. If I learn this strategy, I will look smart and I want to look smart.

    Extrinsic - external motivator to make learning worth it - Ex. If I learn this strategy, I will learn a prize from the teacher at the end of the lesson.
