  1. Something a lot of people forget to consider when they're graduating high school and considering what to take in college.  If you see yourself having a certain lifestyle, you better be realistic about the potential of a given career or job.  Call it what you want--job or career--if you aspire to have a middle class or better lifestyle, you better plan an education that will deliver that.  A general arts degree or diploma may not have the same marketability and career potential as an accounting or nursing designation, or software developer, or a skill such as plumber or electrician.

There's no such thing as a free lunch.

  2. a career is when you go to college and get paid a lot

and a job is just something that you get without a college degree

  3. There's personal opinion and the professional definition.

    Professional definition is:

Job:  Hourly wage earner.  Non-exempt position (means you can get overtime).  Usually no degree is required (e.g. you can be a secretary without a degree, but not a brain surgeon).

Career:  Typically is an exempt position (means you will probably work more than 40 hours and don't get paid overtime).  These are typically positions that require a degree or formalized training of some type (brain surgeon, lawyer, etc.).

    My personal definition:

It's all a matter of attitude.  You can be a secretary and view your position as a career and set goals, etc. and act like a professional (with or without a degree).  You can be a lawyer and view your position as just killing time to collect a paycheck.
