I am looking at getting in to one of the two, which would give me a better work out and what are the differences in cost as I am looking at joining a club then buying my own.

  1. kayaks are usually made of fiberglass or polyethelyne. A kayak paddle  is double bladed and you alternate strokes of the left and right blade. There are a wide range of yaks available. Whitewater, recretional, touring, sea kayaking, fishing kayaks.

rowing is using two seperate paddle and pivoting back and forth to push yourself through the water. rowing is a better workout,if you are looking for excersise. you can row a canoe, dinghy(yacht tender), or rowboat.

and sculls are just really long thin profesional rowboats.

15 grand for a kayak or canoe or rowboat is ridiculous

  2. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

This person sumed it all up, but go with a plastic oar, there cheaper and very reliable, and a canoe is much more fun than a kayak, and don't forget your life vest.

  3. Both can bea easily gotten into if you live near water. There are club teams for rowing everywhere and lots of places have programs for kayaking. In these cases you would probably not have to buy your own equipment. But rowing is definitely more expensive. Getting a single to row in is generally much more pricey than kayaks because of the strong and lightweight material they are made out of. Oars are also more expansive because for the single, which is called sculling, two oars are used. As for the better workout it varies on your interpretation and you only get back what you put into it. Kayaking is almost exclusively upper body. Rowing is a full body workout that works your legs, core, arms and back. So it depends on what you are looking for. In my opinion racing in rowing is the toughest and most intense kind of racing in the world. Have fun

  4. Good answers. Rowing can be as simple as puddling about in a flat bottomed scow or rowing in an Olympic class boat. Kayaking is the same...today, you can paddle a 'sit-on-top' plastic toy or opt for a, sleek down river model. You need instruction. Costs range from $100 to 'no - limit'. Either sport is a so called, 'life sport'. Try both. Then decide what you want to pursue.

  5. Kayaks are usually made for one person and the oar is double ended.  They have a lot of versatility.

Rowing could be just in a canoe, or as part of a rowing team, but they usually use oars with a paddle on one end only.

Technically rowing is more strenuous, but I think kayaking is more fun.

Neither is cheap, but if you join a club, you probably just have to buy your own oar.  I doubt you have to buy a boat, do you?  Maybe you can rent one and see if you like it first.

  6. If you want to do some rowing then check your local collage. They will most likely have a rowing teem. If you cant join their,s then maybe they can direct you to a club you can join. That is the going to be your best work out. Unless you kayak like i do that is all day and against the current The cost will be around $15.000. either way. A ruff guess as you should not need to buy a boat to join a rowing teem just personal safety equipment.
