I am mixing up a batch of Hurrianes (in honor of Gustav) and the recipe calls for dark rum. Is there a flavor difference?

  2. Dark Rum

A rich liquor made from sugar cane or mollasses, that is made in charred oak barrels to give the rum it is dark flavorful appeal.

    Light Rum

Light Rum is a colorless rum, that is made the same way as other rums except with a shorter distillation period and without charred oak barrels to distill in.

  4. Dark rum is, well, dark.  In the simplest terms, darker rums are made from less refined molasses than lighter rums, or aged in charred barrels instead of plain.

Opinions vary, but for Hurricanes I actually prefer a rich gold rum than the usual dark ones.  Try a couple different ones and see which you like.
