What is the difference between materials in the jerseys, mesh or solid cotton like fabric??

I recently was in the market to purchase a boston celtics home jersey, I went to a couple of different sporting stores & found to different kind of materials, one jersey had like a mesh material & the other was a solid material like a cotton shirt. My question is, what is the difference between the 2 materials????
