  1. The words monoecious and dioecious are derived from Greek and mean one (mono) house and two (di) houses. In plants that means the sexes are separate but on the one plant (=one "house") or separate and on different plants (=two "houses"). Many plants in the squash family are monoecious (one plant with flowers of separate sexes) and the best known dioecious plant is marijuana.
