  1. necrosis=cell death from old age, degradation, etc. cells are not planning on dying

apoptosis=programmed cell death--cells are supposed to die in this process

  2. Well, let me talk about the two situations with using any type of cell first.

I.) Necrosis: un-programmed cell death. Mostly due to an accident or some other damage to the area. The cell will swell and die off. But with this, the cell contents are distributed and not cleaned up.

II.) apoptosis: programmed cell death. Cells will decide to "kill" itself when the conditions are right.

Neurons: If you have some type of brain injury like a lesion, problems with blood vessels, contra coup from accidents, or other forms of injury, => necrosis.

If cells are infected with "hibernating" diseases, then that may activate apoptosis. Usually when the cell is in distress or some other kind of stimulus will throw the cells into apoptosis.
